Federal Immigration Enforcement Action Focuses on Criminal Offenders Across Georgia

A large-scale immigration enforcement operation carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) resulted in the arrest of more than 1,200 people who authorities said were in the United States illegally, according to agency officials. ICE stated that more than half of those arrested had either been charged with or convicted of crimes in the United States.

The operation was conducted across Georgia, with the majority of arrests taking place in the Atlanta metropolitan area. ICE officials described the effort as part of the agency’s ongoing mission to enforce federal immigration laws and prioritize individuals with criminal histories.

ICE Says More Than 700 Arrestees Had Criminal Charges or Convictions

During an interview discussing the operation, ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) official Marcos Charles said officers arrested more than 1,200 individuals during the coordinated enforcement effort.

According to Charles, over 700 of those taken into custody had criminal charges or prior convictions. The offenses cited by ICE included sexual battery, aggravated assault, domestic violence, assault and battery, DUI-related offenses, and cruelty to children. Officials said those individuals were targeted because they were both unlawfully present in the country and had criminal records that raised public safety concerns.

Charles praised ICE officers involved in the operation, saying their work contributes to removing individuals whom the agency considers threats to local communities.

Enforcement Extended Beyond Metro Atlanta

While the Atlanta area served as the primary focus of the operation, ICE officials said enforcement teams carried out arrests throughout Georgia.

Charles described the operation as a success and noted that similar enforcement activities are conducted daily across the United States. He said ICE officers continue to enforce immigration laws established by Congress and will carry out additional operations in communities nationwide.

Agency Describes Evolving Challenges for Officers

Charles also discussed the challenges ICE officers face while carrying out enforcement actions. During the interview, he said the agency has experienced a significant increase in threats directed at personnel.

In response, ICE has expanded officer training and adjusted enforcement tactics, including changes in how officers locate, monitor, and apprehend individuals with criminal histories or final orders of removal. Charles said these operational changes are intended to improve officer safety while allowing the agency to continue its enforcement mission.

Immigration Enforcement Remains at the Center of National Debate

The Georgia operation comes as immigration enforcement continues to be a major issue in national politics.

Some lawmakers and advocacy groups have called for significant changes to ICE or have argued the agency should be abolished, while federal officials maintain that ICE is responsible for enforcing immigration laws enacted by Congress. The differing perspectives continue to shape public debate over border security, public safety, and immigration policy.

ICE Signals Continued Nationwide Operations

ICE officials indicated that enforcement efforts similar to the Georgia operation will continue in other parts of the country.

According to Charles, officers with Enforcement and Removal Operations conduct arrests every day, focusing on individuals who are in the country unlawfully and those identified as public safety priorities. Officials said the agency will continue adapting its operations while carrying out federal immigration enforcement responsibilities.

The Georgia operation is among the recent large-scale enforcement actions highlighted by ICE and reflects the agency’s continued focus on identifying and apprehending individuals it says are subject to federal immigration enforcement.
